SUMMARY:Sat. June 15: Vital Japan「Diversity and Inclusion -
」\n“What are the obstacles to Japan becoming a truly diverse and inclusive country?”\n◆Speaker: \n\n◆勉強会の流れ\n  -6:30pm Networking time\n6:30pm: Opening\n6:45pm-: Workshop by the Speaker\n9:15pm Session end\n(9:30pm- Networking Party at a casual Italian restaurant) \n◆使用言語： 英語のみ \n６月のVital Japanでは、New York出身の黒人作家であるバイエ・マクニールさんをスピーカーにお迎えし、日本社会における “Diversity” と “Inclusion”について考えます。 \n  \nOver the past few years\, there have been a growing number of incidents that have garnered local and international attention regarding Japan and its views and treatment (intentional and otherwise) of non-Japanese residents and biracial citizens. \nIncidents with racial overtones that have made it glaringly obvious to the global community that while Japan may not be a racist/xenophobic/deplorably insensitive country\, it certainly has a lot of work to do to prevent that labeling moving forward. \nDue to its reputation for being a safe and “homogeneous” country replete with polite and welcoming people\, Japan still garners the benefit of the doubt. But these incidents\, though often superficial\, are problematic and symptomatic of some deep-seated issues that require the country’s full-attention to remedy. \n▼Speakerのご紹介\nBaye McNeil\, Author / Columnist / Social Commentator / Activist\nBaye is from Brooklyn NY and has lived in Japan since 2004. He is the author of two critically-acclaimed books on life in Japan: “Hi! My Name is Loco and I am a Racist” and “Loco in Yokohama”. His monthly column\, “Black Eye”\, for The Japan Times\, raises awareness of issues related to “blackness” in Japan\, and profiles people of African descent from around the globe living in Japan . \nIn 2015\, Baye spearheaded a successful petition to protest the airing of a blackface minstrel show on Japanese TV\, and since has become the voice of people of African descent all over Asia. His writing and activism has garnered global attention\, and has been featured or discussed in The New York Times\, on\nBBC\, CNN\, Washington Post\, Wall Street Journal\, Huffington Post\, USA Today\, Yahoo! Japan News\, Associated Press\, Kyodo News\, Toyokeizai\, Nikkei Asian Review\, Asahi Shimbun\, Shukan Shincho etc. \nHe also conducts workshops and seminars at companies and universities across the country on race issues\, in his continuing effort to help Japan achieve its desired and inevitable goal of increased diversity and inclusiveness. Baye graduated from Long Island University with a BA in English and Communications. He lives in Yokohama. \n  \n*English Announcement \n\n\n\nVital Japan 176th Monthly Session – June 15\, 2019 (Saturday)\n*Topic “What are the obstacles to Japan becoming a truly diverse and inclusive country?”\n*Speaker: Baye McNeil\, Author / Columnist / Social Commentator / Activist\n*Session Language: English\n\n\n\n\n*When:  Saturday\, June 15\, 2019\n6:30-9:15pm (Doors open 6:00pm) Networking Party to follow \n*Place: Tokyo Shigoto Center – B2 Hall\n3-10-3 Iidabashi\, Chiyoda-ku\, Tokyo \n*Access: 7 minute walk from Iidabashi Station\n10 minute walk from Kudanshita Station\n*Map \n*Language: English \n*Cost: 1\,000yen \n*Sign Up Form  Sing Up Now!\n(Max 200 people)\n*Session Flow:\n  -6:30pm Networking time\n6:30pm: Opening\n6:45pm-: Workshop by the Speaker\n9:15pm Session end\n(9:30pm- Networking Party at a casual Italian restaurant) \n  \nPlease join us for an interactive workshop with Baye McNeil\, Author / Columnist/ Social Commentator / Activist.  You won’t want to miss this great opportunity to network while you explore how Japan can become a truly diverse and inclusive country. \nOver the past few years\, there have been a growing number of incidents that have garnered local and international attention regarding Japan and its views and treatment (intentional and otherwise) of non-Japanese residents and biracial citizens.
