Half of his career was devoted to Russia\, including: Director of the Soviet Union Division (1988~91)\,\nDirector-General of the Treaties Bureau (1998-99)\, Director-General of the European Bureau (1999~2001)\, three times serving at the Japanese Embassy in Moscow\, altogether for eight years and a half. He retired in 2002 as Ambassador to the Netherlands. \nSince then\, he taught at universities abroad\, including Leiden University\, Princeton University\, Tamkang University in Taiwan\, University of California Santa Barbara\, Seoul National University GSIS and also\, Temple University Japan\nCampus. \nHis recent publication in English includes “Japan’s Foreign Policy 1945-2009（2010）”; “(co-editor) East Asia’s Haunted Present: Historical Memories and the Resurgence of Nationalism (2008)”; “(editor) Japan and Reconciliation in\nPost-war Asia: The Murayama Statement and its Implications (2013)”;“(co-editor) Building Confidence in East Asia: Maritime Conflicts\, Interdependence and Asian Identity Thinking (2015)”.\nFor other books and articles refer to the official website. \n  \n
