新年度に”get the lay of the land” 【英語表現】

今週(土)午後開催する【ビジネス英語編】のVital English-英語勉強会「ビジネスでのスモールトーク」用に執筆したダイアログに “the lay of the land” という慣用表現がでてきます。

東京オフィスからやってきた同僚に、ミーティングが始まる前、米国人が次のように言葉を投げかけます。

I see you are still getting the lay of the land.

So, all the way from Tokyo.　The land of sushi, manga and Jpop.

Please tell me.  What’s hot in Japan these days?

“the lay of the land”というのは、文字通り「地勢、地形」を意味しますが、転じて、「新たな場所の状況(を理解する)」という意味でよく使われます。

まもなく新年度。get the lay of the land が必要となる人も多いかと思います。
